Just got an 01 XJ and the vehicle itself seems fine apart from some things here and there. Unfortunately I had a bad experience right away with my gas tank being siphoned. I have to park on the street so I can't protect it that way, besides it happened at work.
Was wondering if there's any sort of lock people have installed on the gas cap or the little door (dont really know what to call it haha). I saw a couple locking gas caps in my initial research but I'm not too sure about any of them.
Thanks for any help.

I recall locking caps were all the rage back in the 1970s gas crisis. everyone it seemed was buying them to add to their cars.
of course shoot to kill is another option, I hate thieves. haha

I had a locking cap all through the 80s and 90s. Mainly from that kid in high school that took every chance to vandalize my car. He thought somehow that would make my girlfriend leave me and date him.
Now I use motion cameras and lead to keep my gas safe.
But the locking gas cap is still a thing and a good idea.

The casual gas thief will pass on vehicles with a locking gas cap. A highly experienced gas thief who knows what they are doing can defeat the cap and steal the gas if there are no easier targets available and they are certain of not being detected or caught. Better that than getting a hole punched in the tank.

After I read that... I went out and got one for mine the next day. lol.... they are pretty inexpensive at any local parts store chain.
I didn't live where I thought my XJ would be likely to be stolen, but mainly so that gas didn't disappear OR...that some clown didn't think it was a cute idea to put something into the tank that shouldn't be there too.

Alarms - 1. no one really pays any attention to them anymore.
From the thief's perspective.... it doesn't matter what you do to secure a vehicle.... if someone wants THAT specific one bad enough, they will find a way to take it. All we can really do is detour the less committed thieves.
Something I've thought of doing for a while now is to install a hidden kill switch.

just a follow up thought... not that getting into an XJ is that difficult without keys... ask me how I know....lol.
But at least with a hidden kill switch would mean they would need to tow it if they want the whole Jeep and if I have the switch hidden well enough....
