Hey i'm new to the jeep world but i have a couple of questions for you guys please help. Thanx a million in advance.

1. i have a little bit of smoke coming off the right hand side of the engine when you stand in front of it and look at it. Its coming from it looks to be the piece that has 3 bolts holding it in place. Its on the top to the right side of the engine and its a small long piece.

2. I have a little water coming from the muffler. What is that and what do i do to fix it.

3. it was misfiring on me the other day so i took it to auto zone and took the code reader and reset it and put some Lucas cleaner in the gas tank and seem to help. But now i'm dealing with the first 2 questions and my oil pressure is reading all the way up past 80. and i just did a oil change yesterday.

If anyone has some advice for me it would really help because i'm just not sure what to do.

Keep in mind i dont have a lot of extra cash so for right now what the cheapest route to go.

you need a new engine, and a new small long piece that has 3 bolts in it. stuff a roll of paper towels in the muffler. it will suck up the water. stop misfiring, you might hurt somebody... ha hahaaa. sorry, had to do it man. don't get mad, get glad.

but seriously, put up some pictures of what you're talking about and i'm sure we will put you in the right direction.

 

yeah sorry bout that. Its a 2001 Cherokee sport, a/t v6 engine. i think my buddy got it to stop smoking and my oil pressure drop some also. as far as the water in the muffler i guess its gone as well. But now my hatch latch is broke. hahaha i cant catch a break. o well thanx for the imput. But as far as the water in the muffler no big deal if it starts again or do i need to check something. Thanx again!

 

more than likely the water in your TAIL PIPE is condensation. that's why it comes and goes. i bet it happens more in the cold weather doesn't it?

 

yeah i think so i have only had the thing for a month. So im getting used to it i guess. i just hope it lasts haha.

 

it will last, trust me. just invest in some tools (wrenches, sockets, pliers, channel locks) and a little by little, the experts can guide you through every repair. i don't think there are many repairs that this forum doesn't cover.

 

Cool thanx man. I have started a little tool collection and hopefully it will b getting bigger soon. Hey and one more thing do you know a good easy cheap way to lift this jeep about 2 more inches or so. i thought about spacers but someone told me they are crappy. Just wondering cause the full on lift kits are a lot of money for 5-6" lift kits. So i would like to find some other way to do it. Thanx

there are quite a few things to consider before a lift. no lift is gonna be super cheap, what kinda budget are we talking about?

 

Smoke could be residual oil burning off from a leaking valve cover, it could be a leaking coolant hose, or a faulty PCV valve, EGR valve... Does the smoke smell? If so, does it smell like burnt coolant, burnt oil? Either way, doesn't sound like an expensive fix. Water in the tailpipe is normal, I get a puff of condensed water every morning on a cold start when it's cold enough outside. Oil pressure: You said, you just had the oil changed. At an oil change place? Seems to me, they put the wrong (heavier weight) oil in it. I always do oil changes and recurring maintenance myself, I heard too many horror stories about Pep Boys, Jiffy Lube, and others. I think, for your car 10W-30 is factory recommended. Ask them, what they used.

 

Uhh... Prolly just like 150 or 200 bucks for the lift. and as for Sho 91 thanx for the info. nah my buddy help me. He is a lot more into fixing cars then me. im getting there just new to it. The jeep worl is awsome though for sure. And i think you were right bout the burning oil on the engine. i cleaned it up really good little while ago and all seems well now. i also saw on a few websites that they used 5w-30 in the colder seasons. so i did that and when i do my oil again i will use 10w-30 for sure. are you gonna wheel it? or do you just want slightly better stance? does it matter if it rides a bit rougher? are you gonna put bigger tires on it? do u mind a slight gas mileage drop? do you have much rust under the vehicle? are your rear leaf springs collapsed?

 

yeah prolly a little ruff trailing nothing major since its my only ride and cant afford to big of repairs. uhh no rust and i will prolly stop at a 32 or 33 inch tire. gas is not a huge deal i would like it not to change to much but i do understand the higher i go the lower the gas goes. and i dont mind a rougher ride as long as its not all over the road on the interstate going 60+. uhh my rear leaf springs are pretty much flat. a slight bend from the lift but a buddy said i could put some "blocks" and that would help he said. So just wondering what my options are cause 01 cherokee are a little hard to find "cheap" parts for. unless im looking in the wrong places. i dont mind used stuff as long as its going to lasts a little while you know?

 

well, here we go. any cheap fix is gonna give you cheap results. mine rides better after the lift, but i made a mistake of buying nitro shocks, they suck.
you're gonna have to relearn driving your XJ with 33's. 33 inch tires are for professionals that know how to DRIVE an XJ and FIX an XJ. if it's your DD, stick with 31's or maybe even 30's. i went from 23mpg to 15mpg highway with 4.5" lift and 31's. but i use 10ply tires and they are right about the heaviest A/T tires out there. if all of the work is done right it should drive and track fine at any speed. the leafpack on 99 2000 and 2001 are junk. add a leaf will keep you up for a while and then, it will sag too (I've heard). shackles keep their size forever. but don't put big blocks on the stock leafpack. anything higher than 1" block, will strain the poopies out of the leafs. 01 cherokee parts are not much higher than any other jeep parts, sometimes even cheaper.
now let's talk lift. you can kiss 31's goodbye on a $200 budget, unless you have mad fab skills or cut up your fenders. or if you don't mind a working progress that will end up costing you much higher than a regular lift over time. i don't know about you, but i wouldn't do that to my DD. if you fix up your leafpack, or get a new HD leafpack, check to see if it will clear 30's comfortably. if not, put some shackles on. the front can get a 2" spacer. your shocks are gonna be strained a bit, but it shouldn't be much, i think. investing in new shocks for a 9 year old vehicle is just good maintenance. but, don't take one person's words for it, ask around. i'm sure there are plenty of people out here that think there's not one bit of sense in anything i said.
