So, I crawled under my XJ for a full service fluid swap and found out that my diffs are 'limited slip'. I have no idea what that means and I'd love to know whether that is bad or what I need to know. I understand the locker concept and I'm not going that direction yet. So, to avoid that end of the rear axle conversation, what should I know about the limited slip and what that means on the road. All I know is that I can spin one tire without the other turning the reverse direction.

Also, the tag on the diff said to only use 'limited slip' grade oil. What oil is that? I put in Valvo full synth 75w 140 front and back. I hope that is the right stuff because it was a $45 investment I don't want to pour down the drain.

PS. RTV SUCKS (imho)!

You should have added about 4oz of limited slip additive to the rear axle, don't trust it to be in the gear oil most of the time it is not.
Limited slip means both rear tires should turn at the same time, like a locker but not totally locked allowed to slip.
As far as the RTV goes it is the only thing I use to seal my diffs the same orange stuff the factory used, the dealership I work at charges @$16. a tube.

 

Maybe I got lucky. This is the spcs on the stuff I used:

• Compatible with conventional gear lubricants

Oh and abotu hte Limited slip with tires turning...shows what I know. ha.

 

that valvo juice has the additive in it already, so youre good to go. the front isnt a LSD btw. hate RTV? me too, which is why i have lubelocker gaskets.

 

Lubelocker gaskets are the way to go for sure.

 

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was just the rear with the limited slip. Where do I get the lube locker gaskets? I was able to get a 'ROL' from ORielly's...it was the only one in town, but I was only able to get one for he rear. I need to order a valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket, so I'll get the 2 diff gaskets for future use. Where can I ge them?
