Default Lifter Tapping

last week my 4.0 jeep starting making a really bad noise until getting up to temp it sounded like a exhaust leak but i don't have one so i figured it was a lifter that kept on getting stuck so i tryed the mystery oil and that didn't help. So i tried the seafoam. I drove down to the parts store put 1/3rd of the bottle in there and drove about 3-5 miles home and let it run for about 5 minutes then did a oil change with 6 quarts of Castrol GTX 5w30. It seemed to fix it but tonight i was driving it and I am getting a tick noise that comes and goes as I drive and when it sets there and idles. This new tick is way less severe then the last. Should i put some more seafoam in the new oil change and run it for a week or to and change oil and filter again. I am using a mopar filters.

A twenty year old 4.0 making a tapping noise is not unheard of, engines do make noise when they run. I would not worry about it unless it is a loud knock, you see traces of metal in your oil, or notice a loss of power. A slight tapping is nothing to really worry about, especially if it kind of comes and goes. Use a mechanical oil gauge and see what the oil pressure is, 10psi for every 1000rpm is the rule of thumb.

the first noise i had was something to worry about but it would go away still. there was a slight power lose with it but the new noise is just annoying. It is still running really good. I think next week i might take the valve cover off and make sure the rockers are tight and check to see if the push rods are straight. I read somewhere you can take ATF and put it in a squirt can and take all the rockers off and squirt a little atf down the push rods and let it set like that for a couple hours and that has been able to quite them down.

Don't believe everything you read. Running a quart of ATF in the engine will help clean out the gunk and may free something up, but there is no need to remove the rockers and squirt ATF into the push rods. If you're going to do all of that you might as well just replace the push rods, that way you know there is nothing in them but clean oil.
