THIS!!!

That's why I suggested a set of short AAL's. They'll get the job done until he's ready to gain some elevation with a real kit.

Zone Offroad offers an AAL lift for around $350 and considering its an AAL it rides suprisingly smooth and even smoother when you go from street tires to mud tires. New OE leaf packs run about $150 per side so for an extra $50 you could be lifted.

i've done many bastard packs. it's a good stage one lift for noobs. it's cheap and relatively easy to do. and they last longer than an add a leaf and stock replacement leafs.

when i do bastard packs, i leave the top main xj leaf bolted in and discard everything else, then cut the eyes off the main s-10 leafs and insert the whole s-10 pack under the main xj leaf. new center pins, new spring wraps and new u-bolts. i have also added new sliders and isolators as well.
then buy a set of used coils or use a coil spacer on stock coils. start with a 2 inch and maybe add a 1 inch to level it out.

new lift shocks are a good idea too, but have gotten away with keeping stock shocks for a bit until it was in the budget.

this will get you on 31's with no trimming. it's a good start...
