Law enforcement package.
Anyone know what the law enforcement model xj's came with?
I have a 99 that I got from an online govt auction for a killer deal. Had just over 90k miles when I picked it up a couple months ago.
The few things I know it has:
Extended idle switch. No use to me really.
10" drum brakes
It has what my dad calls a posi lock rear diff. When on a lift and you turn one rear wheel the other one spins in the same direction. It'll also leave two tracks if you get on it on a dirt road.
That's about all I can think of or see.
Big upgrade from my 96 xj se. Which is pushing 190k.

I think I had the trac lock in the 96, when on a lift with that one the wheels would spin in opposite directions. (was told, maybe erroneously, that this was a test to see what diff you have)

"With Cherokees there wasn't a 'standard' police package like some other vehicles."

Sounds like you got yourself a nice cherokee!

It might have a locker... I don't have any experience with the trac lock...
Put it in park
Jack up the rear
Ask a buddy to rotate the driver's side tire counter clockwise and hold it
Rotate the passenger tire in the same direction, it should lock, rotate it in the opposite direction and it should unlock with a mechanical sound.
But the best way is to take off the diff cover and look. This way you can change the diff fluid also.

Did some searching and looks like you're right about the diff. Guess my 96 was open in the rear...

It its a pretty nice one... Got it for a steal too. Needs some minor body work. Holes in roof for antenna and wiring that I'll be patching up soon. Gooped up with rtv now to keep rain out. Has an ugly green stripe around it at door handle level. (was a federal park ranger vehicle) thinking of painting that black to match the bumper corners and the plastic door trim I put on it. Want to put on a factory roof rack or fab my own. Already did the diy hd headlight harness and upgraded power and ground wires. Want a set of hella e-code lenses or the auto pals. Have a pair of hella 500s on the police style push bar. Really happy with this truck. Especially purchasing it sight unseen and not knowing what the exact milage was . Thanks for the replies guys and the link daddycat

Didn't think of the skids. I'm used to seeing them because the 96xj I drove for 9 years had full skids too. I'll have to look now.

At the hospital at the moment. Gf is having surgery. And the xj is outside with a parking ticket because I forgot my wallet when I woke up at 4 am lol. I'll get some pics up later today. She's ugly now but I'm working on it. (the xj that is lol).

I'm sure you could find some at the jy razor. I'm from nw pa and the yard I go to has at least 8 xj's. I would bet at least a few of those have skids. I just pulled and installed injectors from a 06 3.3L chrysler minivan engine. $20

Unfortunately the 2 JY around here have d*** owners that don't let you "explore" and even if you get the part you want they want your first born for it.
In fact one yard would rather crush a car and sell it for scrap then sell it to someone who wants to negotiate a good deal. Speaking of a wrecked 3rd gen F body wanted it for parts. It was sitting in the yard for almost 2 months... motor and trans gone, interior picked clean. They wanted 1,500 for it! A buddy of mine wanted to turn it into a project did a few negotiations followed by walking away... I went in a week later, it was gone... they said it was scrapped!
Sorry that took your thread off topic...
