Larget Wheel/Tire on OEM suspension?
hey all!
just purchased my first XJ the other day.An 01 sport, 140k, one owner, CA car (no rust). just hoping the head won't crack!
anyway, i don't plan on doing a huge lift (maybe 1-3" in the future), but wanted to get new tries and wheel first. i was wondering if anyone is running stock suspension with larger tire? whats the max size i can go without rubbing? and i wanted to get a bit of "poke" without having to use spacers, what am i looking at for offset on a wheel? suggestions?
thanks all!

Welcome to the site.
If you have not found any rust, you haven't looked very hard.
Now on to your question:
Figure out what lift height is first, then buy tires & wheels.
BTW: According to some on this site your cylinder head will crack 12325.00987% of the time. Save yourself the headache/heartache now, I will pay $50.00 for any 1999 - 2001 Cherokee.

haha! well 50 buck is tempting... but ill pass for now. didnt pay much for it, so i figure if the engine goes, i wont be in tears.
sorry about making a newbie mistake of not being very clear! i forgot to mention i don't want to trim the fenders... i was really hoping to ease into a lift. i wanted to do a bit of 4x4'in with the stock suspension, before i decide if i even need a lift for what i will be doing (mainly getting to trailheads for hiking/ mountain biking/ camping/ect..) but the tires on it now have next to no grip. i figure if i'm getting new tires, might as well get the stance i want too.
i was hoping there were stock XJ's on here with larger wheel i could see some pics of to get an idea of the right amount of offset and size to shoot for. or just some suggestions would be good.
though, i will say that if i could get a decent small lift (under 3") for cheap (recommendations?) i might be willing to just dive in head first and do it all.
thanks guys! glad this forum exists, seems like a great resource!

Congrats on the XJ! I'm runnin stock and I have 235/75R15 general grabbers at2, identical to the BFG all-terrain, they don't rub and I didn't trim my fenders, and they don't stick out. Only thing I've come across is when I make a hard left turn I rub my lower control arm. As for the lift and wheels, check out rustysoffroad.com they have a 3" with wheels and tires for around $1300. For that package they run 31/10.50.

Hi... Welcome. I have a stock suspension 2000 xj on 235/70-16 which is about a 29" tire on 7" wide rims. I plan on upgrading to a 1.5 - 2" lift to accommodate some 16 x 8" moabs I picked up and use a 245/75-16 tire which is about 30.6" tall
which as I understand won't rub with the new leaf packs and springs. I'm attempting to attach a photo I "am borrowing" from a fellow member which is my inspiration and IMHO a perfect all around DD.

I don't know if this helps or not but, I'm running 235/75-15 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac's on a stock 90 XJ, bump stops are gone (rotted away) and I haven't managed to rub/scrub anything yet.

Kind of depends on where you run it (mine is 95% commuter), want it to look like and how much money you want to spend. I just did a Rocklizard homebrew 2" lift and think the 235's look OK. http://www.rocklizardfabrications.co...dget_boost.htm
My head is fine with a 142k and I overheated and replaced the radiator. The oddest thing about the 2001 is that it has three cats and 4 O2 sensors. I also replaced the two lazy upstream O2's and picked up 1.5 mpg.
Have fun.

235's ran fine on my stock 2001 with 7" rims. Wranglers are $87 at Walmart, I bet they are sold cheap because it is the most popular size for small trucks. If you don't go 3" and run 31's it doesn't make much sense to go bigger than that. 235's are almost 29 inches tall.

well, i would be willing to spend up to 2k on suspension and wheels. only issue is i am on contract in CA, so i am temporarily removed from my garage in WA... so if i wanted the suspension on asap, would have to pay labor. double sucks when i have to pay someone to do what i would love to do myself!
as far as driving, i was hoping to get a stiffer suspension so i dont "Roll" as much, as i like the sportier feeling. any kits you would reccomend? i will be using it to commute some days when its too crummy to ride my bike (old honda CB).
and lastly, the look i want is really just a more aggressive stock. taller, wider stance. pretty much the picture that was posted with about 1" to 1.5" more offset (wider).
thanks again!

-----> go with a 2" budget boost (BB) and 15x7 or 8" rim with 3.75" back spacing. And trim those fenders!!!
2" BB
235/75 DuraTrac's on soft 8's with 3.75 BS
Trimmed fenders and no plastic!

beautiful XJ's! both of them!
its becoming clear that i should just go for it, and get a 2" lift kit while im at it... it really looks good with a moderate lift. not too aggressive, but how it should have come out of the factory. just looks right.
i did a bit of searching, and besides the BB lift, there were these...
http://www.quadratec.com/products/76117_800.htm
http://www.rocky-road.com/xjbudget.html
http://www.quadratec.com/products/76090_80X_PG.htm
my question is it worth the 800 to get new leafs and springs? i heard it will make the ride poor (but i wouldn't mind a bit stiffer ride)...true?
im interested in the skyjackers with new shocks for 400. any good?
or should i just get the 100 budget boost?
suggestion?
thanks guys! looking to try and get them installed in the next week, as i have a trip planned to the backwood. ill be sure to post pics when i get a chance.

Welcome, I ran 30x9.50R15's on stock suspension for awhile and the only rubbing I had was the LCAs at full turn. I put a budget lift on it and that took care of the problem until I put 31s on and then I went up to 3.5" of lift.
