it'll be the torque converter bolts or a clacked flexplate.

if it idles kinda choppy right now, I'm putting my money on cracked flexplate

did you remove the torque converter from the transmission and inspect it/drain the trans and look @ the fluid as well? was it red, burnt red/pink, or did it look like it had alot of metal flake in it?

the tranny fluid was nice clean red color? is that good or bad? i think it might have just been serviced not to long go.

did you use lock-tight on the torque converter bolts and flexplate bolts?

did you check tightness of bellhousing-to trans mount bolts?

did you remove the torque converter from the transmission while the transmission was out? if so (which you should have done as well as replace the tranny input i.e. pump seal), how did the inside of the torque converter look?

did you remove the transmission pan and check that out to see how crappy it is in there?

lastly...if you didn't do any of those things, but the fluid looked nice and new, and you think it was serviced recently....then the trans probably had issues that the P.O. tried to cover up (if you just bought this recently...)

so the tranny could be making the noise is what your suggesting? because it sounds like its coming from the top end of the motor yes i lock tight everything and torqued all bolts to specifications. converter looked fine and tranny shifts fine doesnt make any noises. the guy who had it before me had it for two months and bought with the knowledge of the knocking sound issue. Did i screw myself? its a really nice clean jeep, I hate to see it go to waste!!!

Default knocking noise from new transmission

Had shop install salvage yard transmission with 33,000 miles on it. 2000 jeep cherokee sport 2 wd 4.0 ltr.Transmission shifts and works fine but I'm hearing a light nocking noise from front end of tranny.Sounds like wrenches clanging togeather.I only hear it at idle,or when i hold the brakes and give it gas. What could this be,did the mechanic not tighten something? This noise was not there before!Any ideas?

Yes....This sounds very similar to my original post on the thread. I had the same description and it turned out that my flexplate was cracked between two of the six bolts that holds the flexplate to the engine.

It could be either that....or loose bolts on the flexplate securing it the the engine...which requires removal of the transmission. Or something much more simple as the flexplate bolts that secure the torque converter to the flexplate...which only requires the inspection plate from the bellhousing to be removed.

Keep in mind, it may be very hard to "see" a crack in the flexplate unless you remove the tranny. If after checking all the fasteners on the flexplate/torque converted doesn't fix the problem then more than likely the next step is removal of the tranny to check the fasteners on the flexplate and checking the flexplate it self for any cracks.

Good luck,
Damon

Default knocking from bell housing

Anyhow I'm a electrician by trade and do alot of my own auto repairs but didnt mess with this"above my head"I payed some back yard mechanic to do it"mistake".The thing shifts fine through all speeds and makes no noises when shifting out of park.Tried to call the chump and ask him to look at it but he claims my salvage yard tranny with 50,000 on it is bad"bull****"He was drunk or stoned and forgot to tighten something.I'm taking it to a shop when i get the money to have it checked.I may attempt to pull inspection cover and check bolts. This truck has been nothing but problems since i bought it 6 months ago. What next a main bearing?Knock on wood. Thanks guys.Anyone no a good wrench in Tampa?

Does anyone know whether the loose bolts on the flexplate issue applies to 2000-2001 XJs with the Aisin 4 speed auto?
