Kind of Confused with this Rats nest
Hey guys,
So to the point, i have a 88 jeep cherokee, 4.0 I6, manual, D30 in front, D35 in rear. I was going to redo my wiring harness on the jeep due to it being old, had some spots that were brittle, and the terminals in the connectors somewhat melted.
But then i had a some what smarter idea, i found an 87 cherokee that had gotten into a front end collision, he sold me their wiring harness that i wanted and a couple more electrical items for $40. I checked the connectors they were all good, everything looked in good condition ( was better than mine).
Now the problem... When i got home i matched up all the connectors and even went as far as matching color of wires and length from my 88 to the 87 wiring i got.. it all checks out but these pictures....
These wires were not with my 88 harness, picture:
(1) the top left picture has the 2 wires under my finger ( red & blue with trace) that goes towards the front. The blue with trace has no connection just goes to the front, as for the red it leads to the front but is spliced in 3 directions... one towards the front, another to the connector on the 2nd pic and if i remember correctly to the back.... As for the other wires they lead to the back and some of them are spliced into other wires. Can this be a trailer connector?
(2) The next connector (top right) is from the front of the wiring harness. The red wire goes from that connector to half way down the harness where it is spliced in a 3 way; one into the connector on the top left, and to the rear.
(3) Bottom left picture has 2 connections on it, the one on the right is the rear connector for the picture number (2) all the wires match except for the red wire in picture (2) it is not in this rear connector, it continues to the splice. *side note, picture number (2) and this connector on the right side of picture (3) goes from the front of the wiring harness to halfway on the cherokee or more like where the driver side belt is in between driver front and rear door is . As for the connector on the left side of picture (3) as you can see is spliced into that connector and is led to the rear of the jeep.
Im thinking maybe they were for electrical items in the rear doors (windows or locks) As for the first picture i have no idea what that would connect into

I have my '87 torn apart in the garage. I'll look at my harness that runs down the driver's side floor to see what it looks like. One of those looks familiar, but I can't place it. I'm looking in the schematic right now.
Our models did not have a factory amp option back then.

The doner '87 might have had a tow package (which means it might have had a Dana 44 axle). With respect to the first picture, it seems it matches up to a trailer tow connector:
Black- stop light relay
Blue w/ tracer- electric trailer brakes
Red- to load side of optional circuit breaker for tow package
Brown- right turn relay
Grey w/ tracer- left turn relay
Brown w/ tracer- to another trailer tow harness connector
Blue- to another trailer tow harness connector same as above
My schematic doesn't show the light blue, however. Does this make any sense to you looking at what you have?

Thanks ajpulley, your probably right... last night i spent some time looking at the wiring and noticed some of the wires were connected with the rear plug, used the haynes book and saw it is routed to the rear lights... but pretty cool, now i have a trailer tow connector... even though i dont tow or know any connector today that would go into that one...

No ideas on the other connectors yet. 13 hour work day today, come home, paper work, feed dog, feed me, conversation with wife, now bed.

I looked at my '87, and there are connectors at the beginning and end of the wire loom running along side the inside rocker/floor panel, beginning at the fuse panel and ending behind the driver's side tail/brake light assembly. The first picture is the beginning, and the second is the end. The only wires coming off of this bundle is 1) towards the seat belt actuator or vertical beam between driver and passenger door, 2) the seat belt buckle (seat belt buzzer), and 3) through the floor near the front driver's side of cargo floor going to the fuel pump/gauge area.
Pictures to follow when they finish uploading.

Yea, i have the same setup... i wish i took pictures or looked more where that connector went to for that jeep....
Was curious though, i see you have a relay in the 2nd picture... what is that going to?
Other than that my wiring harness has the same thing minus that from picture number 2 and 3

Separate circuit for auxiliary backup lights, relay is triggered by factory backup wire.
Good eye, I forgot it was there. Put it in about 24 years ago.
