The only direct bolt in D44 you will find for an XJ is one that you get out of an 87-89 XJ with the towing package. I scored the D44 I have in my 91 XJ, out of an 87 that was a police vehicle in it's past life. Any other D44 front or rear will require fabrication to bolt up.

They were also available in all years of MJ's. I suppose they could come in a 2 wd 87-89.
Don't forget about the Isuzu d44. can be found in their small pick ups. There is also the isuze 12 bolt which is suppose to have some strength attributes as a d60.

I ran my 35x14.50's on stock axles and never broke anything in the front. The splines were tweaked a little bit but i'd just carry spares before i went out and swapped in a d44 front. The rear however is a different story. Welded spider gears went boom, splitting the carrier in half and shooting chunks of metal through the diff cover

The D44 I have in the rear came out of a 4x4 87 XJ. If you snag a D44 out of an MJ you're still doing some welding because the spring pads are under the axle on MJ rear D44s.
X 2 on the Rubicon front D44s. Branden beat me to it. D44 center section and the rest is exactly like the D30 in the front of your XJ, now. With the weakest links being the long side axle shaft and the small knuckle U-joints. You would actually be better off grabbing the front D44 out of an older fullsize Waggy and fabbing up the proper mounts for the front XJ five link. You would get manual lock out hubs that way, too, if you get the right year of Waggy axle.
