When i go to start my xj the past few nights, it will grind the starter probably about 15 times. if i hit the gas pedal itll start. other times itll starter for five or six times then start on its own. I know hitting the gas pedal doesnt deliver gas in a FI but open to suggestions?

Try the "poor mans prime", badically pretend you have glow plugs:
Key to RUN for 5 seconds
Key to OFF
Key to RUN for 5 seconds
Key to OFF
Key to RUN for 5 seconds
Key to START
If it fires up right away you've got a leaky check valve that's causing a loss of pressure. Running the pump before starting will build up pressure again.
