Just bought a 96 Cherokee sport..... Electrical gremlins. Please help.
Bought a 96 Jeep Cherokee sport 4x4 A/T about a month ago off this guy for 750. It had a bunch of problems which i've been fixing one by one but now i have a bigger annoyance. I drove it for roughly 170 miles until it stalled at a red light and wouldn't turn back on, i called up a tow truck and had it towed to a shop where they charged me 80 to change a fuse and wrap up a "open wire that was shorting on the body"
I thought it was alright.... until it did it again, when i ran over to a gas station and got a fuse and drove it to an autoparts store to buy a box JUST incase.
It did it again a couple days later when i was making a turn, i popped a new fuse in and went on my way.
Yesterday it did it again but this time everytime i put a new fuse in and went to crank it, it blew the fuse. I called up another tow truck and had it towed to my dads place, after getting there for ****s i popped another fuse in and tried it....... turned on just fine.
Sorry for the story but thought this might give you guys some clues. I'm thinking
1. The fuel pump is dying
2. Theres a short somewhere
3. The fuel pump wires are fried and heating up
2 other things i noticed is the o2 sensor wires are exposed and ghetto spliced in, they ARENT touching any metal from what i can see, but theyre just hanging there.
And when the jeep is off WITHOUT ANY KEYS, the windshield wipers and heat/ac blower have power. But i think that related with the ****ty ignition wiring.
The only other problem i have is an engine tick that comes and goes, i think its a stuck lifter. Any tips on getting rid of that besides rebuilding?
Thanks in advance

I plan on following the wiring, i'm almost positive its a short somewhere. I'll keep you guys updated. Anyone else want to chime in though?

I meant to mention that the 1996XJ is my favorite year. Your's looks cool. They are fun to work on. I suggest getting an official FSM from ebay. It makes fixing them much easier. I found a few listed for about $50.

Money well spent. I use both the Haynes and the FSM. The Haynes to help get me in the right direction, then the FSM for the details. The FSM is well written and very detailed. You will be able to trace the circuit quickly. Good luck with it! JB
