The rod end im pointing at was what i was trying to remove to take to the parts store to replace.

Well i loosened the jam nut and had a pry bar under the mount and on top of the rod end. Smacked the side of the rod and the threaded part fell off and it sheared itself off flush with the mount on the horizontal side. So now all i have access to(or lack thereof) is the top of the rod end with the nut on it.

I cannot get the rod end nub out of the mount. In the pic right where the top of that boot is, is where it broke off. there is nothing to grab onto from the bottom side. Cant get a hammer or anything in the top side.

ahh now i see... if u have a grinder and cut off wheel you can cut it super flush to get rid of any taper on that stud and try to pound it upward. or go to a junk yard and get a new mount, or take this as a sign to upgrade to a double shear frame mount.

Alright. I will get back at it tomorrow after work i hope. The only problem is not alot of room to swing a hammer under there. I tried drilling it but didnt get too far.

I might go out and try hitting the daylights out of it. i dont know what else to do.

if u have a u pull it near u, u could get a new mount for next to nothing. if u go that route start soaking the nuts on the mount.

I pulled the whole bracket off and drilled a hole right above the rod end so i could get a punch and hammer in there.

Two broken vise's and still no luck. Map gas torch, PB blaster still no luck.

Is there a secret to getting these damn things out???? I have a pull a part close but no time to go up there tomorrow unless i take the day off work which im thinking i might have to do to get everything done.

I have some pics of whats going on i will post as soon as they load.

You are trying to push it AWAY from the castle nut on there right?? If you have the mount off, place the mount in a vis, and remove the castle nut, them knock the ju-ju out of it!!

EDIT: Are you just trying to get the nut off??

Yeah im trying to push it down through the mount. I have been hitting it so hard it has actually started to rip the top off the threads so now the nut is stuck on there.

here is the very bottom of the rod. It has been flush like this since it broke. I tried drilling into it with no luck.

Yep, your going to need a new mount. I'd do like you said, and just go to a PnP, sorry, but I think that would be the best route!! HTH!!

Tim, i leave you for a couple of hours and i come back and see this mess. How the hell did you break that rod?!??!
Now before you destroy that mount with drill and hammer, TAKE IT OFF the frame, (two bolts on the side and two on the bottom).
Then put it in a vise with a big socket on the broken side so that the rod can slide in the socket once you close the vise.

Another thing: the correct (and only) way to separate the tie rod end from the mount is two or three hammer strokes ON THE MOUNT from the wheel side. This is enough to stress the rod and it will just fall out without using any bar, lever force etc.
Never ever hammer on the tie rod ends or the bars.

I have the same problem, and just bought a new track bar for mine. I was just under my '01 XJ trying to get the old one off, and am having a heckuva time. I live in the rust belt, and the nut that holds the track bar to the body is about half gone. I think I will have to take off the bracket that bolts to the frame. Any pointers would be nice. Also, how do you get the steering stabilizer off from the tie rod?
