Jeep starts, then dies! I'm stumped need help
#46
I had a similar issue when I first got my XJ and it ended up being a bad ground on the fuel sending unit. Pump would kit in and out and allow the jeep to run for short periods. I had the sending unit out and was messing with the wires and found the ground to be be bad on the sending unit. Cleaned it up and scraped the metal where it was grounded and it has been running fine now for a few years.

Classic bad Automatic Shut Down Relay symptom.
When an XJ won't start &/or run always check the relays 1st. (fuel pump if it won't start, ASD if it won't run). Why? It's quick, easy, takes no tools & needs no parts, as, if a sharp tap won't fix it, the fan relay will get you home or to the next autoparts store on your route.

I don't think the A/C relay is the same but you could swap in one that looks the same but is for something less important.
There are only 2 types used in XJ's (AFAIK) the little black cubes (yes I know the fuel pump one is often - supposed to be? - green, but you tell me how else it's different) often referred to as "Bosch style" which are all interchangeable (& can be replaced with the cheaper 4-pin ones, but just stick to a reputable brand - like Bosch, Hella, Cartier even Lucas.)
The others (which I'd never seen before I got my 1st XJ) are smaller & generally more reliable, just as well as, until recently, they weren't common over here.
