Correct me,
you are tapping on the starter and it engages? That is a sign of a dead spot on the stator.
Another option is there is a copper disc in the solenoid and it can get a burnt spot that does not make contact when it engages.
Either way, replace the stater.
The other issue could be the solenoid relay that is by the battery.

Then you need to take a test light and check the wire on the stater relay by the battery. Make sure your getting fire to it when you turn to start. If so, then replace the relay.
you should be able to jump across it from the large post to the small slip on conncetor and activate the starter too. It is where the small wire from the starter actually goes to. So you can follow it back towards the battery and find it.

im pretty sure the relay is the problem. otherwise i dont think it would start by coneccting the leads with a hammer. im going to change the relay after school and see what happens. this is the first time it has did it in over a month.
