could not retrive codes
Hello, I have a 2001 XJ, and followed the above derections with the odometer reset. All went as described, except after reading 999999 it apeared to go the a test sequence of all gauges, and all lights in cluster, but odometer just went to milege. Key method did not work. Auto part store read 303 code. My symptoms were that after running at temp, If I stoped for 10 mins to run into store, came out and started it, it would run rough. It has done it 3 or 4 time over the last 3 months, but this time I put it in nutral and goosed it, hench the check engine light. It would only do it after it was at temp, and restart after 5 to 20 miniuts. I put some gum_out in it, disconected battery for 5 miniuts to reset check engine light 2 times with no luck. After I got home I did it again for 30 miniuts, and it reset just fine.It also runs just fine. Can codes be read without reader, and does anyone have an idea of whats going on? dealer put plugs in 10K ago, 79K miles, well cared for. Thanks, and the reset time issue, may help someone else I hope.

Can anyone else try this (the part in bold) and see if it works for you? Just make sure you're watching the odometer as soon as you let off the button (kind of tricky, because you almost have to have a see-through arm...).

I tried that "key trick" and all it would give up is code 12, and code 55. I know why code 12 is there, I had to unearth the battery when I replaced the water pump because I had to remove the electric fan. Nothing else was removed or disconnected. Now I have a Jeep that is gutless, no speed, and when I get off the gas it stalls. The "key trick" is telling me nothing about why it started doing that. No, nothing got disconnected by accident, there is no vacuum leaks, etc.

I tried to see how it would idle with the temp sensor and the TPC disconnected, still idled like #*@*. Reconnected the leads and did the "key trick" again, now it says code number 12, 45, 22, and 55. I don't have turbo so where 45 came from I don't know. Is it going to run crappy no matter what I do until I erase the codes from the PCM? And how does one do that anyhow?

I have a 1999 XJ. I had the same issue with it just showing the mileage instead of an error code, but I think the code flashes first - not at the end. And I don't think you need to do the "key trick," - only hold the odometer button and turn the key to "on" and then "off" and let off the button (no on, off, on, off, etc.). This is for my 1999 XJ, not sure about any other model/year. But when I did this, I noticed a "2.3" which I think is my error code. So I'm guessing the "2.3" is "23" and my problem is a faulty intake manifold air temperature sensor.
Can anyone else try this (the part in bold) and see if it works for you? Just make sure you're watching the odometer as soon as you let off the button (kind of tricky, because you almost have to have a see-through arm...).
