My son has a 1998 Cherokee Sport. A couple of weeks ago, the truck would not start.
He replaced the starter and it still did not start. We took back the original starter to get his core charge back and for the ****s and grins we had it tested, it started to smoke. I had him take the replacement back to get tested and it was bad. We had the 2nd replacement tested and it was good.
Between the 1st and 2nd replacement, he changed the ignition switch, it still will not start.
Is there a schematic for the under hood fuse box? We replaced a relay thinking it was for the starter, it was not.

This is what I know after the above:
1. The battery is at 12.5 v
2. The fuel pump works when the key is turned on.
3. The battery cables need to be cleaned and new ends attached.

My question, is there a sequence of testes to get this truck running?

Is the truck cranking ?
Is there a spark to the plugs?
Is ther adequate pressure at the fuel rail?
Did you check all of the grounds? (Especially the one alongside the battery with the corroded cables)
Check the fuses,swap the relays
Important Search and read previous post on subject.
And then start troubleshooting You'll be okay.

The truck is not cranking.
I'm going to fix the cable ends and clean the ground connections, how many are there?
I didn't check the fuel pressure.
I replaced a relay, thinking it was for the starter. I just read how to check the relays, I'll do that tomorrow.

you can try and jump the starter and see if the engine spins over, check the smaller wire for power when the key is turned to crank, make sure the wire from the battery to the starter has power.
