Jeep Cherokee issues?

I am getting ready to purchase a Jeep Cherokee, not sure on what year yet. I have owned several Jeep Wranglers in the past. I love Jeeps. I am curious if there was a certain year to avoid do to bad transmissions and or a lot of engine issues? Thanks for any help

welcome to the world of XJ! I think there was a thread about this a few days ago. In 2000(which I have and found out after the fact) they changed over to distributor-less like the TJs did and many have the infamous 0331 head cracking issue. mine included. I had a 93 and a 98 and those things would never die, they were beasts and kept on going and going.

The 4.0 liter and AW4 auto are really bulletproof if taken care of maintenance-wise. I don't think there are many other engine issues, as with all jeep 4.0 liters the rear main seal leaks, but that isn't a hard fix.
