I'm not here to argue...people get passionate about oil, it's probably the number one argument in the vehicle world. But I've been a headhunter in the automotive engineering industry for fifteen years. I can tell you that I have never heard of anyone sacrificing engine lubrication over fuel mileage.
When a car maker specs an oil the number one thing on their mind is eliminating warranty events. One warranty charge on an engine for anything - even "driveability" - wipes out the profit the engine produced, not to mention the goodwill lost. Car makers do not take chances with oil and you use something other than their recommendation at your own risk.

If you want i can dump 4 pages of formulas and calculations providing evidence to what i'm saying (done that before on here) but this wouldn't help because it's a form of comunication that you hardly could understand.

For my next oil change this comin paycheck, what would you guys recommend? I will use whatever you guys recommend the most and see where it takes me. I just want to keep this running as long as possible and as quiet as possible.

I just thought of a new idea as to what might have happened. Being that I ran the engine pretty much dry of oil, I probably also ran the oil pump dry and/or filled it with all the sludge sitting in the bottom of the pan. As far as I know, running any type of pump dry is pretty much a death sentence for it, but maybe oil pumps are different. Enlighten me. Also, is their any way to test the pump without the specialized tool for it?

Any input on my last post? The knocking has gotten louder since I first posted this thread, but still only present at idle as far as I can tell.

OK........SOOOO.... I replaced the sensor today and little to my surprise, my oil pressure is very low. Barely registers on the guage at idle, and is about 1/8 inch before the 40psi mark on the guage at any rpms 1500 and greater. I believe this is due to a bad oil pump. Is their anything I can do to clean the filter on the pump without pulling the pan? I only ask this because I won't have the cash for a new pump until next week when I get paid and this is my daily driver. Are their any cleaners I can run through it to clean the filter and prolong its' life for the time being?
