Issue with temp gauge on dash.. 97 xj

I just picked this jeep up and the temp gauge isnt working on the dash. What could it be? Any way to see whats what?

Im going to try and replace the sender. from what I have been reading, the 97+ only have the one in the t-housing and not the one in the rear anymore.

I have a 98 and you are right, we have the sending unit in the front near the t-stat. It is a really simple swap and will only take a few minutes.

when mine went, the guage all but stayed at 0
