Default Interior light won't turn off

I am having a really odd problem. My interior lights randomly came on while driving, now they won't turn off even when the jeep is off. I also discovered when I turn the rear defroster on it temporarily turns them off. it's a stock 2000 cherokee

There has been a similar issue thread recently, don't know how that went, but a search might do good. One thing: did you turn the headlight switch all the way to 'off'...?
Otherwise it sounds like it shorting somewhere...

Check all door and hatch switch's closely for proper function, if all good then may be headlight control for dome lights.

the headlight switch is turned off. I also unplugged all the door switches and the lights stayed on.. I don't know where the switch for the hatch is, so I pulled the fuse for the interior lights

In the latch, could be the whole issue.

Default Dome light stays on or will not turn off solution! Power window and speaker issue

The problem is likely the wiring harness for the driver door. I had this same issue and also intermittent power window issues and a noisey speaker. I resolved issue by carefully removing the harness through the speaker hole. Unwrapped harness and repaired damaged wires. All started with dome light staying on dim.
