Default Installing a 97 exterior door handle on a 91

I installed a 97 exterior door handle on my driver side rear. I used the short rod from the 91. Now the door won't open from the outside. Do I need to use the rod from the 97? I searched here and googled it with no luck. Any help would be appreciated, TIA

The outer door handles are 84-96, and 97-01. Never tried to use one for the other myself, but after comparing the backsides using pics on ebay, the clips appear to be in a slightly different postion. One looks higher/lower than the other. Could be why the button doesnt open the door. The shorter rod isnt moving far enough to pop the latch.

Swapping the rod might work. Never tried that myself either. Dont throw the other rod away tho, if swapping them works.
