Default Inspection for bad motor mounts?

I had a friend tell me that my motor mounts are bad and just to make sure I was wondering whatever exactly should I be looking for when inspection the motor mounts? I checked them and I can stick my finger between the rubber and metal on the mount and right off the bat I thought that the motor mount is bad.. or am I being to paranoid?

What your looking for is the sleeve that the bolt runs through seperating from the rubber base beneath it. This can be easily checked (albeit carefully) by having some one stand on the brake as they give it some in gear. Stand to the side of the rig as you do this. Torque will allow the motor to rise on a bad mount.

The metal surround is there to stop the travel on a bad mount.

I will check and is there suppose to be gap between rubber and metal on the top part of the motor mount?

Yes. That upper rounded metal is what retains the assembly in the event of mount failure.
