I have about 135k on my 4.0... im the second owner and ive had it for about 2 years. It has slowly developed a knock... I checked yesterday to see if the bolts for the torque convertor were tight and they were... I did NOT check the Flywheel but i dont think its that, because it gets quieter when its warm.

My question is what year 4.0 should i be looking for? I know i will stay away from the 2000 and 2001 because of the 0331 heads. So am i looking for a 97-99 or can i go lower than that?

Will my 2000 AW4 bolt to a 97-99 motor? 23 spline i think.

Are you looking to swap a whole engine or build one? If it were me I would just get a newer or rebuilt block, stroke it with new internals, rebuild your head, and swap out everything else with whats on your ride now.

Well, for starters. if you want something older than 2000 then you will need to make your 2000 XJ run with a distributor type of ignition system. Your 2000 has the COP ignition 1999 and older have dist.

96 to 98 4.0 engine will work, you will have to make a bracket for ign coil pack and swap distributor to the 2000 to match computer system. I just replaced my motor in a 2001 found engine $600 70000 miles had been rear ended. Lot easier and less problem with 99 to 04 engine. A Grand Cherokee will not work brackets and engine mounts different. You will be ok with 0331 heads if you watch your temp don't run it excessly hot. They will crack between #3 and #4 cyl. I have not had problem yet with 0331 head. Heads will swap out with the 96 to 98 with mod to ign coil pack for support.
