mine are cut and folded in the front and rear i would suggest you do that because when you stuff your tire and you just cut you'll slice the crap outta them folding leaves a little lip which will help stop that just my 2 cents good luck

for the front just follow the body line rear cut and fold. sucks your dad's giving you hard time, mine went out and got me cut off wheels and a second grinder so my GF could cut the rear.

I cut the front and back on my 99, used a fine tooth jigsaw, worked great. My dad basically reached his breaking point with complaining about my rig and just said make it look good it your gonna do it. For the back i just cut right along the pinch welds then knotched the rest and bent the remaining lip over. Popped the factory paint off but who cares a jeep ain't no sports car here. Anyway, i flaked the remaining loose paint off then, took all weather paintable caulk and sealed where i had bent the lip over. Taped off a nice little 1 inch area primered it, then sprayed it with bedliner. Turned out really well infact if you take you rime you can hardly tell cause the bedliner almost makes it appear as a lopro fender flare kinda. they don't make inserts idk where your dad ever came up with that idea. It's your jeep man do it up how you like it, you're driving it, he only has to look at it. Good luck with your project man, hope i might've said something helpful.
