Hey there. '96 XJ here and my air control module in the dash has been dark about ever since I bought her ten years ago. I think 6-7 years ago the light for the unit came on just a couple of times sporadically but nothing ever since, which to me suggests a short somewhere maybe in the unit, dunno.

Any advice on how I should go about researching fixing this problem? First I guess i should install a new bulb just to make sure that's not it. Are the bulbs replaceable on these units?

Take the radio out and you'll see a socket on the back side of the control. The bulb is replaceable.

 

Yeah you can replace the bulbs and you might want to think about changing to leds also.

 

Thanks, glad to know the bulbs fairly accessible. But I wasn't aware there were LEDs in there, I guess as in light diodes. I didn't think those wore out too often but since I'm in there I'll get at em. Are those as accessible as the bulb is once the units out of the dash?

There are no LEDs in there. Simple #74 replacement bulb.
