ignition switch wont start jeep but shorting starter will?
my daughters 91 cherokee 4x4 auto w/i6 wont start with the key but will start right up shorting the starter, does it have a solenoid. thanks guys

its built into the starter, time for a new starter. had a 74 superbeetle that was the same way. so i just left it the way it was and put in a push button for the starter.

it's not the solenoid if you can short it to start. Your problem lies in the ignition circuit. Check the fuses first. Then see if you get voltage to the solenoid trigger wire when you turn the key to start. If not you may have a bad ignition switch.
