Ignition lock cylinder ripped out when jeep stolen

Default Ignition lock cylinder ripped out when jeep stolen

My 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport was stolen and recovered with the ignition ripped out (picture attached to this post). The top and bottom shroud are a little busted but I can drive the car by starting it with a flathead screwdriver. It steers fine. Do I just need to replace the ignition lock cylinder with a new one if I don't care about the shroud?

Suggestions? Can I do this pretty easily myself?

The dealership wanted to charge me $1,065 for a new steering column, for parts and instalation

This happened to me when my jeep was stolen, and fixing one is so complicated, and may not be possible, or worth it. You're better off finding a good one in a junkyard for $45.00.

Junk yard column replacement is the best idea, be wary of the airbag. Just wondering why your insurance didn't take care of this?

Even if the insurance covered it, it would most likely be a $500 deductable.

well i bought the car and it got stolen in less than 24 hours so i hadnt insured it by then. sucks, but i am trying to mitigate the problem the best i can.

Any ideas which type of column I have from these???

I guess my best bet is to just call up some junkyards looking for the part?

Yours most likey is w/o immobolizer(why they stole it) then AT if automatic MT if manual, then with or without tilt wheel

It pays 2 hours to change by the book, its easy enough, you'll need a steering wheel puller if you plan to keep your steering wheel

so I have been taking detailed pictures of the entire steering column replacement project (which I plan on posting once finished) I am doing, and running into one issue:

So I've gotten into the guts of my steering column and i am preparing to remove the "steering coupler bolt". However, I'm not sure if this is the correct bolt.

Is the rusty bolt going through the white plastic spacers pictured below, the "steering coupler bolt" on my used column, that I need to remove on the old column in my jeep?

ok, i have them attached now. The one on the left is the replacement column i purchased and plan on installing and the one on the right is the currently installed column that is broken and i need to remove.

I feel like the "steering coupler bolt" is actually the 2 bolts on that hold the column in on the black bracket picture above surrounding this area. There is one on the left and right side for this bracket but the factory service manual and instructions only refer to 1 bolt. Herein lies my confusion.
