Default If I take the Cat out will the check engine light stay on?

I need a new muffler at the least and I am thinking about some options and I have had a couple of buddies tell me while I'm under there take the Cat out and don't look back. Will I have a Check Engine light on the dash forever? I know this is not legal. Thanks for the help.

My '91 didnt. I had a mustang gt and it had 4 cats and never had a check engine light come on when they came off.
