I had similar symptoms when i put a cheap Throttle position switch from ebay, mine's a 98 with fuel injection so I'm not sure if he would have this, is his xj carburated? if so the choke maybe?

It's fuel injected

How about his fuel filter? What's the rail pressure? Does it maintain pressure throughout the RPM range?

The problem was found and fixed. The map sensor was replaced. Now it sound like it came out of the factory. Thanks for all your help, guys

Congrats! mines probably the same problem, replacing map and new TPS this weekend
