idle problem

idle problem
i have an 87 jeep cherokee and it was running fine then i started it and i heard what sounded like if you polked a whole in a can that was full of air you could hear the air pressure escape so I turned the car off looked under the hood and didn't see anything. then I started it and when i drove it the hesation and stumbling started. what could it be?
