Fill us in on this one. I've always thought the 'W' in the oil visc label was for winter conditions. However, I'm starting to think I have been taught wrong.

You've been taught wrong.

The first number is the startup viscosity, the second number is operating temperature viscosity. At operating temp, 0w-30 and 10w-30 are the same. At startup, 0 is going to provide a much easier start in cold weather.

You're right, but the W does stand for winter. This right from a chemical engineer at esso. And I'm pretty sure were repeating ourselves here. I already stated the above facts.

Will you have anything long enough to claim the lifetime warranty? People run xjs 300k on regular oil. (and by the time it does wear out, will they just deny your claim based on normal wear and tear for 300k?)
It might be worth it to you but it's not to me. LOL

I think it also applies to large commercial vehicles...then we're talking million plus miles. Also, not everyone's 4.0 lasts that long. My brother in law bought a brand new yj in 89 or 90, and it spun two bearings in 4000 km...xjs are awesome, esp. with the 4.0, but are not indestructible.

high mileage has more zinc in it so it protects your parts better. i WILL NOT use synthetic. hydraulic flat tappet cams do better with conventional and it is reccomended. i have a high profile cam so i use additional zinc supplements. it protects everything better. 5W30 conventional is best even though others will work. longevity could be shortened.
