Default i think i blew the engine.

i am so sad.
our 3rd jeep cherokee sport ('01) may have busted a rod today.
apparently there was very little, if any oil in it.
i checked it about 6 weeks ago, topped the oil and added antifreeze.
now, its knocking in a bad bad way.
we just payed it off - 2 days ago!!

this is the 3rd time we have lost the jeep due to engine troubles.
each one just after it was paid off.
each one just under 200,000. miles.
i should have known better.

just had to share.
i love my jeeps, but it think it will be a long time till the next one.

would you invest and replace w/a new engine @ $3500 - brand new w/ warranty?
or replace with a used engine...
or..
sell it.

any feedback welcome.
feel free to lambaste me... i have been a bad jeep owner.

Hey it happens... I would try to find a low -mile 4.0 and drop that in your Jeep. One at my local Junk yard sold for about $400, but it had well over 200000 miles.

Sorry about that. I would do what was said above, drop in a used one for cheap. A new one for 3500 is robbery

Get a reman engine w/ warranty because you don't take the time to even CHECK the oil, and when/if that one blows it'll be covered. And you can get one for less than $3,500 installed.
Yes you've been a bad Jeep owner.

You can find complete(intake to oil pan) 4.0's anywhere from $200-400 in the local craigslist. I'd swap that in and keep a better check on the oil and you should be good to go A Jeep is known to mark it's territory(leak oil) and the oil should be checked at least every 2-4 days depending on how bad the oil leak is. Good luck and don't give up on a Jeep. Take better care of the next motor and it'll last you a really long time!

shouldve checked the oil more than once a month, then youd know the head cracked and sprung a leak before the motor blew.

Three? You have to be kidding...

I think you should buy a Honda. I have seen those run on water, no oil, and sand in the crankcase. Seems like it will match your maintenance habits, or lack there of.

If you really like your cherokee, then put in a used motor. That $3,500 is too expensive. If you are indifferent to the cherokee, then just sell it.

I suggested a reman engine with a warranty so that she could get years of trouble free service out of it instead of installing a used engine of unknown history and only getting maybe a 90 day guaranty. Less headaches in the long run.

You just payed it off. I would go with getting a reman engine for it than to have those lousy car payments month after month again.

Ya, if it only lasted 200k miles, you'd be crazy to buy another Jeep.

I would suggest getting a reman motor with a good warranty. Also, if you go that route, look into getting one with a 0630 Cylinder Head Casting...this would rule out the possibility of a 0331 Head cracking (which they're known to do on 00-01 models).
