I did a search everywhere and I cant find an answer anywhere. So to start, in the last week my brother and I have replaced the tranny, pulled the t-case and resealed it, did a t-case drop, lifted 4.5 inches, and did some engine work that is irrelevant to this problem.

I have a aw4 and a 231 tcase in a 88 renix jeep with a 4.0. Vacuum disco front axle.

My bro did the tcase and tranny since he has a shop and after he reinstalled everything the front drive shaft has been spinning. The tcase basically things that I am in 4hi even though i have the shifter in 2hi. I took my vacuum disconnect out and unlocked the front axle so i can drive on the highway without tearing things up but I would really like to have 4x4 so I can go play with my new tires and lift. BTW we had this problem before we did the tcase drop so im not sure if that had any effect on it at all. Does anyone know the reason that I can't get the transfer case out of 4x4? Any help/ideas would be great.

Not on the Renix. It only spins when engaged in 4x4. That changed when the went away with the stupid vacuum disco front.

I haven't adjusted the linkage yet. I'm not really sure how to get to it. And I have moved the xj a lot. Its not going out of gear without something else changing. How do I get to the linkage to adjust it?

Just crawl under. It'll be pretty much right under where your shift lever would be.
