Default I need someone with knowledge!

ok so i have 2 85 jeep cherokees, both manual 5spd trannys: one with a 4 banger and one with the v6...

1) i have read and been told that ALL 2.5l engines came with AT LEAST 4:10:1 gears, is this true?

2)is it possible for the 2.5L to have come with 3:73:1?

3)My v6 jeep is the "chief" edition, does this mean it has the 4:10:1?

The only reason i am so baffled is i read the codes on each of the front Diff and both are EXACTLY the same. And from what i have read on here the code means they are 3:73:1. I baught the 4 banger to run untill it dies and then i plan to upgrade to a newer 4.0L and swap axles but theres no sense on swapping if it doesnt have the 4:10:1... can anyone help me with this?

The 2.5L definitely has 4.10's. The Chief is nothing more than how it was trimmed out.

i read the article and it is a little confusing the way it is written:
(4.10:1, manual transmission, V6 automatic transmission, I4 engine.) unless the "Automatic transmission" is not supposed to be there? which might be the case?

My biggest confusion is that the little code on the front diff says that they are 3:73:1 on my 4 banger? Unless my Previous owner was a complete moron and swapped out his 4:10s for a set of 3:73s.

NEVER, EVER use the words "has to", "all", or "always" when refering to AMC-era Jeeps...

Every single one could be ordered with any option at any time.

So yes.. your 2.5l manual might have come with 3.73's... as that was one of the available gear ratios.

Just like your V-stink might have 4.10's.... but having a Chief package is no indicator of it.

whowey is correct, my 85 came from fact. with 3.73 gears. Pull the cover off the diff and count the teeth- ring gear teeth divided by pinion teeth-- will give you the ratio

That is very helpfull thank you! i am going to say that both of them have the 3.73's in them since that is what the code on the tag says, i will count them tomorrow or sometime this weekend.

I was just going off of what i heard and have read that all of the 2.5l came with the 4.10's i had no idea what could or couldnt be done so thats good to know

i wasnt sure if the chief package was what they refered to as the "off road package" i figured it was different but since the chief came with all of the skids and what not i wasnt 100%. Thanks for all your help guys!
