I need some transmission and rear axle help ASAP
so my transmission fluid has alot of metal in it and so I'm swapping transmissions and from what I've read they are universal swaps, currently looking at swapping an 2000 into a 98? Along with that I discovered I was lied to about what rear axle was in this vehicle so I am swapping from a dana 35 to a Chrysler 8.25 and need some guidance as to what I need(ujoints or anything?)/how to do that swap. Also I doubt it but is the driveshaft and gearing swappable between the two axles or am I stuck having to buy new gearing and driveshaft for the Chrysler 8.25?

I do believe the 98 was a one year only deal and its not soo much with the AW4 itself iirc its because of the way the tcu communicates with the trans for the shift solenoids... there is a compatibility chart out there for this that explains it better than I can atm.
Rear axle wise, no you cannot trade gearing between the d35 and 8.25, yes you would need to re-gear it at that point to make it right. Driveshaft length is a fair question though, you could take a measurement from axle centerline to the joint strap mounting surface of the yoke and compare them between the 2 axles. Call that the pinion snout length. If they are close in length then your prolly just fine, if not then yea you may need to modify or replace your driveshaft.

Low buck best case scenario IMHO is grabbing a used useable rear end somewhere within a half days drive.
Does the Dana 35 under your Cherokee have the wrong gears in it now or is it worn or something?

Nothing wrong, but I'm on 33s with a lsd and plan on towing an medium sized offroad trailer and don't wan't to deal with the chance of breaking the axle, plus I wan't to do a disc brake swap and the axle I'm putting in already has had it done.
wait but I don't have abs? if I had abs there would be a sensor going to the rear drums right? I notice there are holes in the ends of both axle shafts but I don't see any abs gear? Also I'm fairly certain some dummy swapped this axle into the Jeep at some point, according to my build sheet I have a 8.25 rear.

A 1998 and 2000 AW4 automatic transmissions are interchangeable and a straight swap. You don't need to mess with the trans computer or swap over the NSS.

That's good to know that I don't deal with the tcu or NSS considering I broke the one on the 98 trying to get it back off after I installed last week to try to fix the problem, I'll have to check if I have a NSS code on the 2000 before I swap and hope that I don't so that I don't have to buy one XD
