If you have noticed any recent loss in mileage and it has been a while (50k+ miles) since your last O2 sensor, you may want to replace as well. Mine went bad and cost me ~2 MPG for a while before I caught it.

Why do people keep telling him to rent a car. He's pulling a trailer. READ!

with all the money you are spending on mods, you will need to get 30mpg to catch up!

I gained 2-3 with mine. Also, swap your mechanical fan with a an electric one. Get a 16" fan with some serious cfm (at least 2500 if you're towing) and build it into your mech shroud. Then just wire it up with a thermo-switch. Maybe buy one of those deflectors that mounts on the front of the Jeep to give it a curved look. I dunno man, if you're running stock you get about 20 mpg highway without towing. Don't expect to get like 30 mpg, but be glad the Jeep will most likely get you there and back with no issues.

I started renting cars for trips after the S15 Jimmy blew a tranny 500 miles from home. The money I spent going after it would have paid for the rental car 3x over.
Do a tune up and make sure the timing is set as advanced as you can get without it pinging or being hard to start too.

I agree...but the OP has to tow a trailer and rental cars don't have that setup...at least not in the $30 a day variety.

BTW, if you keep the RPMs below 2000, you'll be surprized at the mileage you get. I can pull 19 with mine in mixed driving. I'll bet it gets 22 or so on the E-way. That ain't bad.

Don't know why, but that seems to be the magic number.

Higher octane fuel has fewer BTUs per gallon. If you run higher compression, or more advanced timing, you will get better mileage and need the extra octane to reduce/eliminate pre-ignition and detonation (both bad). If you notice any pinging climbing the mountains, bump up a grade to prevent it. Otherwise, stick with regular.

Have a safe trip.
+1 The only difference with the high octane is the flash point (temp/pressure where the fuel will auto ignite without spark) It is for higher compression engines, it's not higher quality.

You should come and play at the dunes on your way!

Less skinny pedal helps, for sure. The accell super-tune kit is decently priced online. Comes with 8.8mm wires, cap/rotor and plugs.
Ford/other 4 hole injectors.

Yes but if you are paying 20 cents more a gallon for the high octane won't that erase the extra MPG you might get over all?
