I just bought a 1996 Cherokee classic it drove fine for a day then the rpms fluctuate and it won't shift unless I put the gas pedal to the floor

have you checked the TPS (throttle position sensor)?

at high speeds i had rpms fluctuate, first thing i did even before knowing about the cable adjustement is replace the TPS. fixed my issue right away.

if you do this and your 96 is anything like mine, the TPS you need to get is from a 97. that's the fun part with the 1996 model year, a lot of stuff is mixed between 1995 and 1997 because of the older body style and OBDII combination which is unique to the 96. just mentionning because i would've liked to know this first, it would have saved me some trips to the parts store and a couple headaches too.
