I just got a new 2000 xj from nevada.
I recently purchased a 2000 xj from nevada did not look at the emissions tag and i live in california so i wanted to see if anyone here knows of a way to get a round that so i can register it.
I am not completely sure what i need i just know that the emissions sticker says that it complies with federal emission laws and i know that california is very strict with all that and i want to know if it can be made cali legal or even if i you add the appropriate parts will the let you register?

Yes, only new cars sold in CA need to have CA emissions. If it was sold in another state originally as long as it has Federal emissions, you should be able to register it in CA. NY has the same restrictions. My 2000 WJ was delivered new to a dealer in NY equipped with CA emissions, then transferred and sold as new in PA. I bought it from a guy who bought it at auction in PA and brought it back to NY. How convoluted is that? NOW the trick is does your jeep have to pass the sniffer test in CA? I would think it would be okay as long as the emissions level met Federal standards. NY doesn't use a sniffer test yet, thank God! In NY, you can pass the emissions test with only one monitor "not ready" and it doesn't matter which one it is, but no CEL light on.
The newest thing I've heard is Congress wants to pass a law that ALL vehicles produced in the US must pass CA emission standards! Here's hoping that doesn't get wings!
