hey man....x2 95XJ-PA....IAC does affect a lot of systems....i was having same issues after replacing the fuel tank (before 97 jeeps were notorious for bad fuel tanks that eroded from the inside and caused havoc to your fuel system!), pump, filter....then checked the IAC and it was randomly failing...replaced it and no problems since...good luck!
so after a week or so today it just wouldnt run then it would run for a few minutes then keep dying so i finally got to autozone and bought one it cost 49 dollars it was dying in the parking lot...
went outside replaced it started it up and it idled at 2k rpm then settled down to a little above 750 but it idles smooth now and it drives smooth even when i let off the gas it idles at 1200 instead of down to 750 *while driving 40mph*
so far so good it runs smooth now

the bad thing was, that my gf and daughter were in the car yesterday and she was coming to pick me up from work and it kept dying on her on the freeway so i had to fix it...
i work on cars everyday and the mechanic i work with first told me that it was the cps going bad so i replaced it, then he said it was the camshaft sensor going bad and i kept thinking about the guy on here that said it was the iac and it sounded right because when it would die it started right back up as long as im on the gas pedal and would stay running till i let off the gas which made sense that it had to be the iac, when i took it off it looked clean but maybe the iac motor was old and getting lazy when it had to adjust for idle idk
thankyou to everyone who gave me ideas i really appreciate it

Hate to rain on your parade but here it is week 2 after replacing the IAC and started having the same issue, only worse - stalling at stops, in reverse, knocking etc. This morning I replaced the CPS and while it is not stalling as much it still does in reverse (5 spd). Performance is better, no knocking or surging when under power. Next step? I am replacing both 02 sensors to fix 2 CELs related to both sensors. Hoping that takes care of issues but not counting on anything. So far have replaced the TPS, IAC, and the CPS. Each took care of the problem for a few days then problems reappeared. Hope you have better luck!

I think I've written this about a dozen times lately so sorry if it seems like its the only answer I have, but have you had the battery load tested yet?
If not, its a simple test and can save you a ton of banging your head against the wall.

so far so good no problems yet... and since i got the jeep for free (well i did alot of work for a guy that gave it to me) i put alot of money into it when i first got it... heres my list of parts...
thermostat
radiator
water pump
new fan shroud
fan clutch
spark plugs
wires
cap
rotor
made aftermarket intake
first o2 sensor (before cat)
cps
and now iac
so far i got like 700 invested in this jeep not that i really car because i enjoy driving it, but what else could cause a stalling issue because ive replaced everything and i have NO problems since i replaced the iac if it dies again im gonna be pissed lol
like everyone keeps saying, if it dies again ill check the battery and alternator but so far ive had NO problems

hey man, good to hear all's going well....one thing at a time, eh!....your fuel system components are what i'd watch out for next....like i said before, if the tank is original, then you will have (or have had) issues with it - it will cause other fuel components to go bad (and their replacements too!) before you realize it is the tank!...good luck!

also forgot i replaced the fuel filter because i thought it was clogged and it was clean but i replaced it anyways....Originally Posted by kbad

one thing at a time lmao i wish, when i first got it, it was running kinda hot, well hotter then i like, close to the 3rd white line so right off the bat i did a cooling system flush and did the first 5 like the first week i got it, then i did a tune up beacuse i was getting like 10mpg screw that, now i get like 16-18 depending on city or freeway

Theres a white wire that goes to your battery. Dont know what it is or what it does but last winter that wire corroded and broke on mine 97. It would start, idle for a few seconds, cut off. I could hold my foot on the gas and it would run, let off, it died. I found that wire after the battery died. New connector and it fired up and ran. May not be your problem but just throwing that out there for people to check when all else looks good.
BTW its a 97 Grand Cherokee with 4.0.

I'm having a similar issue with my 96 XJ.
Initially it stalled when I came to a light. I restarted it but it died immediately. Got it going again by giving it some gas and keeping the RPMs up over 2k. Three miles down the road it starts to backfire and eventually died again at the next stop. Towed it home and started diagnosing it:
1. No "Check Engine" Light
2. No diagnostic codes
So far I've replaced the following:
Coil, Rotor, Cap, Plugs, Wires -> resolved the back firing
IAC valve -> helped with idle, but eventually the idle drops below 1k, starts running rough and then stalls out.
I've tried to disconnect the battery and ground out the + wires to reset the ECM. It seems to help a little each time, but still it eventually starts idling rough and the dies.
Any suggestions?
