Default Howling at 50mph

I m suspecting my hubs are going out on my 91 laredo.
Is that a good indication? tomorrow im gona lift the front end up and test by holding the wheel at 12 and 6 o clock and see if it has play.
If it is the hub.. the hub is a generic hub right as in there's nothing fancy about it, right?
I m going to call a couple salvage yards i suspect a 90-96 hub should work?

check ball joints and wheel bearings also. can you feel anything? or just hear it? might wanna check tires- pressure, balance, rotate them, check lugs. check ujoints- driveshaft and axle shaft.

could be the rear diff

do about 60, and let off the gas, and then back on, see if it makes a difference. A bad rear diff will howl with the throttle and will go quiet with no throttle

as for the front hub, find a clear stretch of road and do about 40-ish, and weave left and right. you dont have to weave fast or anything, just enough to get some weight on the outside hub. when you weave side to side, if one of your hubs is bad, it will make noise when turning cause it will put load on the bearing and make noise.

well... when i 1st got the jeep, it had sat under a tree for 2 years and i bought it with the intention of building it up for a "sweet" daily driver.
Its a salvage title jeep, hit on the driver side, and the front clip was replaced.
The steering column is loose but not much, the ball joints were drier then anything. I greased them up and water came out of them. I re greased them about 3 times so far and the steering response is 80% better!
I pulled the brakes off the front, new pads and turned rotors.
I scrubbed off a pound of dirt and grim off them as well.
It had some worn 32 bfg at's that seemed like they were howling as well.
Its only when i got a barely used set of tires put on i realized the howling was probably the hubs.
Now im pretty sure its them.
Theres a howling when i accellerate as well. Im gona replace the hubs this week. Oh... when i turn slightly to the left it makes a rattle sound when going about 40-45mph...
But any hub from a 1990-1996 xj should work..? right?

Thanks
mark

not sure right off hand, probably, try autozone.com and see if the part numbers are the same for the different years
