i got a buddy who took the 318 out of his van and said i could have it. how hard would it be to make this work in a cherokee
If you're willing to do a tremendous amount of work, it will work. It's a question about how willing you are to take that kind of project on.

There was a cherokee near me on craigslist a while back that had a chev 350 in it.
You could most likely make the 318 work but it will be a project; motor mounts, cooling, transmission, etc... Is it really worth it?

There is a guy on NAXJA from Wisconsin that did it... He took a ton of pictures and had a pretty decent thread about it. But after finishing something happened and it no longer is on the road.... I can't remember if something happened with the engine or tranny or what not....
BTW.... cooling would be as huge a problem as dropping any other V-8 into the Cherokee.. I know my 5.2 runs pretty hot to start with...

what year van
the older 318 motors were very good I don't know the years
but if it 76 or older it good
check advanced adapters for conversion kit

it's doable, as in any hybrid swap. if you're willing to make it work, then it will. you're going to have to figure out motor mounts, transmission and tcase...whether you have to figure out some adapter plate to mate the 318 to your jeep tranny, or if you go with a different transmission. if you went that route, you'd have to get into a different t-case, then custom drive shafts, etc. if you went with an adapter plate and your aw4 transmission... is it going to handle the extra torque of a v8?
also, will if be fuel injected or carburated? if it's fuel injected, you're gonna have to figure out computer harness stuff...i.e. a TON of wiring(merging two harnesses into one, or starting from scratch and building a new harness). I have no clue about computer stuff with the jeep. I know from my experience with my wrx..you can swap motors and have your ecu custom tuned to meet the motor's size difference, injector duty difference, etc. if your jeep is 95 or older, I'd seriously consider going carb'd. it would save you a TON of headache.
there's a TON of work you'd have to do to make that work, but it's possible, and if and when you do finish it, you'll have a massive sense of accomplishment knowing you made it work. it just depends on your skill, your needs, and your resolve...because you'll wanna quit about halfway through...
if it were me, and i absolutely needed more power.... i'd build a stroker out of my 4.0. they make some pretty nasty motors when built. alot of the smaller baja style trucks run built and stroked 4.0's.

As I said above, witha ZJ donor with a 318, you can take pretty much everything and swap it over, that would simplify it a lot, but there would still be some work.Originally Posted by HxcJohnny

what makes you say its the same powerOriginally Posted by OUTCAST
Stay with the 4.0l. Same power and natural fit.
the 318 is a 5.1
copared to the 4.0
the van motors had grate torque
it wold be a great motor for a jeep
the down side is if there is conversion kits easily avalable
