no leave the case in 2wd and put the tranny in neutral. if you tow with the t case in neutral it won't properly lubricate itself and burn up.

I thought about pulling the driveshaft but didn't know if it would leak or not. Guess that is a foolproof way to do it.

Just tried to do that with an XJ XJ. No fun! Had to stop about 30 miles into it. The 2nd XJ kept trying to push the other XJ around corners and stuff.
There is just not enough weight in an XJ or Liberty to do this safely.
And trust me on this I'll try anything once!
Just too scary for me.

if you pull the rear driveshaft, cover up the end up of the t-case because it will leak.

strap the cherokee into the tow dolly, put the trans in N and transfer case in N as well. This will release any tension on the rear drive shaft. Remove the rear drive shaft and cover up the end of the transfer case. Then put the Transfer case in 4lo and the trans in park. This will lock the front tires and keep them from rocking back and forth when accelerating and braking. This is how I tow dolly my jeep. Closest off road park to me is 2.5 hours away.

Also check your straps after 5 miles just to make sure everything is still tight and at everystop. Also lock the steering wheel. This will keep the tires pointed straight on the tow dolly.

Disregard, I just realized you're using a dolly and not flat towing...

Mattpar is correct. I've used a dolley and flat towed mine.

To dolley: Load the Jeep onto the dolley and strap the front wheels. Disconnect the rear drive shaft from the rear differential. I bungee cord mine to the exhaust that way I don't have to worry about any fluid loss. Be sure to secure it from moving left to right AND front to back or it could fall out of your tranny. Put the transfer case into 4-lo, leave the transmission in "Park", release the parking brake, and unlock the steering wheel. (Turn the key forward one click, the steering wheel should unlock but the accessories should still be off.)

To flat tow: Simply put the transfer case into neutral, leave the transmission in "Park", release the parking brake, and unlock the steering wheel. (Turn the key forward one click, the steering wheel should unlock but the accessories should still be off.)
