I am escorting an old Model A pickup up a road with some hills for a few miles. No idea if the Model A will make it, that's why I'm escorting it. If the need comes up that I need to tow off the road where do I attach a tow strap?

I may have to tow it for several hundred yards because there are some points where the road has no viable shoulder.

I saw that the rear bumper has a couple of mounts to the uni-body that I can wrap a tow strap around. Are these safe to attach to?

You don't have a hitch receiver?

 

Nope, I have a former government Jeep so it is absolute bare minimum.

 

I'm trying to think, but I don't think there is a good point in the rear without a receiver. Those stock bumper mounts aren't too sturdy imo.

 

The rear shackles (for the leaf springs) are probably the most solid thing you're going to find to tie onto (assuming they aren't rusted to hell). The stock bumper and mounts are just stamped sheet metal and fairly weak (they might hold up to just "helping" a non-stuck vehicle up a hill though pushing may be a better option, but I wouldn't trust putting much stress on them in a real "recovery" situation).


... Of course a receiver hitch for an XJ only runs about $100 (or much cheaper if you can find a good used one at the junk yard) and comes in very handy:

 

if you have no other choice - use the aforementioned spring shackle. ive done it in a pinch and pulled way harder than i should have.
