How to tighten Parking break?
Anyone know how to tighten the parking break? Its starting to not hold so well even when I pull it all the way up. Its been getting gradually less and less reliable.
Thanks

You might check the rear drums because your shoes might be worn out. That being said there's an adjusting mechanism under the jeep. You can tighten the cables going to the rear wheels by turning the nut on the long screw. Get under there, you can't miss it.

I have the same question....(not to hijack the thread) but when my Jeep went in for inspection he said he adjusted everything, and infact he had to deadjust it to get the drum off. But the emergency brake has about the same hold as the transmission, and I'd like a little more out of it. I climbed under and looked where the cable splits from 1 into 2 and they aren't lose but they aren't tight. Suggestions?

there is an adjuster on the brake it has a little star wheel on it. you should be able to get a skinny screwdriver in the back side of the drum break and turn that little star wheel until it grabs a little...then back it off a couple of clicks. you should really check to make sure that your brake shoes aren't worn out that could really mess your day up if you're on an off camber hill climb and you start to roll back and your brakes give out. that would really suck.

With the way PA inspections are, I know they aren't worn. But thanks, I'll try that.

i'd take the drum off first and find out exactly where the star gear is and which way to turn it to tighten it. then put the drum back on and find it through the little hole in the back. that way you know exactly where to look.
