What if your buried in the driveway in 4 feet of snow and its not already shifted in to 4hi? I've tried to put it in 4hi when stopped and I didn't like the noises, they made me cringe... Would you put it in 4lo? Another tip... If the tc is in neutral and you try to put the transmission in park it doesn't do anything because the tc is in neutral... That's when you get all scared because your 15 years old pulling your cherokee into the driveway to wash it and you can't stop it from rolling away...

Pull lever into 4hi then drive or move forward or backwards a lil the. Shift. Never shift and drive at the same time. Always have foot off accelerator when shifting

You know every jeep is different due to normal wear..so to say "one size fits all" is sometimes not true for somthing that may have 200k plus miles or maybe a jeep with 50k. A good rule of thumb is to listen to what the person says who designed the thing..

What are you talking about...? You must place the transmission in neutral if you're going to try to shift it at a standstill and not be quick about it.

This must be an "automatic" owner thing. That's what this is for:

That's what that is. I'd say just get disc brakes and left foot brake lol

Thanks for the OP and comments. I still am not clear on how i am to shift 4wd on my 1993 country (auto-matic) then...

From what your post reads i can shift in to "full-time" 4WD while driving....say 50 mph on payvment. BUT, im not supposed to shift into 4wd Part-time or 4WD Low, unless im at 2-3 mph and on wet or loose surface.

My shifter goes from:

2wd
4WD Part-time
4WD Full-time
4WD Low

How do i "shift on the fly" to 4WD Full-time, going 50 MPH, without going past 4WD Part-time first. This setting is in between 2wd and 4WD Full-time on the shifter.

Its not an issue, if i just always go to 2-3 mph for EVERY shift, but, i would like some clarification.

I do have a biatch of a time getting it OUT of 4WD. This typically involves a long drive in reverse and then forward, then reverse again..until it finally slips out of 4WD. (but thats a whole new issue)

You can shift into both at any legal speed. 4Lo is what you need to slow to 2-3mph to shift into.

Check your linkage and fluid level. It happens with the NP242 more often I've noticed.
I do not left off the throttle when shifting from 2hi to 4hi; but then again i'm driving slowly and my foots not buried in it. Never had issues in or out.

2-3 MPH is ONLY for 4WD Low Range, this is because of the gear reduction. The "High" ranges are all 1:1 and can be done at any speed.

The reason 4WD Part Time is bad on pavement is because the transfer case locks the two driveshafts internally. When the front wheels turn you get a difference in distance traveled between the two axles. It's this difference that causes the drive line to bind up (and spew U joints and transfer case bits). Loose or slippery surfaces are required in order for this tension to release and prevent breakage. If you didn't have a steering axle up front this wouldn't be a problem, or in theory if you could keep your front wheels pointing absolutely straight.

Anyway blasting through 4 PT to 4 FT won't be a problem if you pull the shifter straight back.

It sounds like your shifter actually may be out of adjustment if you have difficulty leaving 4WD Full Time. They can sometimes become loose or rust in the wrong position. Do a search on here and you'll find the procedure.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the comments and advise.

As i have no idea how to check the linkage or fluid levels or the shifter adjustment, i will be doing a search for this process.

Thanks again.
