I swapped opt my 242 for this 231.. and the 4wd sensors dont match up. Is the only function of the 4x4 sensor to give mt a 4x4 light on the gauge cluster ??

yea, the light won't come on. On some older models, it is built into the vac hook up for a front axle disconnect and 4wd won't work, but if yours is non disco you will just not have a light.

My light doesnt work either.. never really thought about it I guess. Of course my Check Engine light has never come on either even though I have had a few problems.. probably just a couple of blown bulbs in my case though.
