Default How do I test Shift Solenoids?

So I have a 96 XJ 4.0 AW4. I have to shift it manually from stops. From 1/2 to 3 to drive, rev matching. Once in drive it'll downshift roughly, and every once in a blue moon it'll up shift. I changed the tps and it didn't help. Now im looking at the shift Solenoids. Ive little to no idea what those are or how they work. I know that you can test them with a multimeter to see what their resistance is and if the ohm reading is too high or there's no reading, the solenoid is bad. And each one is assigned to something. So I need to know how to test it, which one correlates to my problem (so I don't to spend $200 on a set of four), and how to replace it. I'm not the most mechanically inclined but I know how to do most basic stuff but anything with the transmission is beyond my knowledge.

Search "governor". Go to page 21-102 and inspect and clean.

You don't need to drop the pan to test the resistance on the solenoids. In fact, you need to test the entire circuit first, so check out this thread for some really good instructions on how to diagnose the issue.
