I know this isn't what you want to hear, but honestly don't buy 2wd. Its more trouble than its worth to try to convert a 2wd to a 4wd. Search the forum as there are several threads addressing this that can explain the difficulties in better detail. You can find yourself a nice used XJ for far less than it would cost you to convert a 2wd. You would basically be rebuilding the vehicle, so unless you have infinite time and financial resources to dump into this project don't do it.
I guess everybody's entitled to they're own opinion, i guess.
But the facts are...
It's actually pretty straight forward, everything just bolts right in.
You do really need to find a cheap parts rig to make the 4WD Conversion cost effective, though!
I'm almost ready to do my swap. I WILL be doing a "write-up" on it when i do, because i haven't found any articles on this yet.

The parts you need for the conversion will be a transmission from a 4x4, a transfer case and front and rear axles with matching gear ratios. You will also need front and rear driveshafts. Make sure your new rear driveshaft matches the rear axle (they were different for a d35 than for an 8.25). I have been gathering stuff for this for a while. It's a good opportunity to locate some axles out from under a 4 cylinder for the swap. Their gear ratios are a but shorter so you don'e have to worry about re-gearing (4.10 in 4cyl/manuals and 4.56 in 4cyl/autos). Also a good time to look into an SYE for the T-case, they are alot easier to install with the case out of the truck. If you do go for the SYE, then you can just use a front driveshaft in the rear of your XJ. That way you can carry just one spare shaft that will fit both front and rear! It's also not a bad idea to replac e stuff like unit bearings and ball joints, as well as cleaning up and re-painting the parts while they are out of the truck. That will save you alot of time an hassle later if something goes bad or needs repair.

Basically you need way more stuff than it would be worth and if you don't know much about cars then you will want to have someone there who knows a bit. I know it has nothing to do with this situation but I had an 83 2wd s10 pickup and I took the frame from a 4wd with all the suspension and everything put my s10 body on it, started it up and found that there were many problems to be addressed. I eventually fixed most of them and it was a smooth running vehicle but way more time than it was worth. If I would have had to buy all the pieces from a jy like you would have to it would have cost me a lot more than it did. It was $500 dollars for the frame, and everything on it but it had no guarantees. I think all together I spend around the neighborhood of $1000 but that was me doing all the work and having to buy more parts from the jy. On a cherokee I would not advise it even if you have someone else helping you every step of the way because it would not be as direct as the s10 swap was. Oh and I forgot im not sure about the cherokees since they have the shifter in the floor but on my s10 I had to cut a hole in the floor specifically for the 4x4. Not really a big deal but still kind of a pain.
If you do it you should take some pictures of the process you took I think it would be cool to take a look at how someone would do that to a cherokee.
