Razor...(and for all who think I want to steal a cherokee) I have all the documentation (Police Report included) to proof the car is mine. I can send it.

Said that, my Cherokee was stoled almost two months ago, and recoverd by local police two weeks ago. The Tow guys don't want to take the Cherokee home, because the streets are so narrow and here a tow car it's around 200 USD (this is Europe guys!). Luckyly the Police have been so helpfull and they towed my baby (for free) to the Police Station, so now it's safe and sound and full of CSI white podwer. (but I can't leave it there so long)

So now, Razor, this was going to be my next question, it's enough to buy the replacement cylinder, or do I need to buy something more? any recomendations for websites on the US to buy (here Jeep parts are soooo damm expensive.. the cylinder it's around 100 USD)

CentralPAXJ, that's the very same original though I had, the Ignition Cylinder is damaged, only locks unlocks, but it's not rotating further... I tried with a screwdriver, guessing how the thieves did it.. but I'm not a good thief... , the Key is not geting all way in, I tried and tried and the only thing I did was to plunge more the Cylinder inside the column.

There is any tutorial on how to change the cylinder? I have found this eHow tutorial, but no images.

http://www.ehow.com/how_5786081_inst...h-jeep-xj.html

I will try to change the cylinder at the police depot lot...

Thanks again!
Jordi

jjrecort check out this video. Most of it will apply even if you have a newer Jeep. You shouldn't need a whole ignition. You might be able to get your lock cylinder repaired.

mmm... I have found this, it's for and older model, maybe late 80's, mine (1993) has a modern Cylinder (with the black ring) but interior it's the same,, so it seems I need to take apart the complete steering wheel to access the cylinder..

I know how to hot wire anything, I work in the salvage industry. That being said, for everyone saying "steal a jeep blah blah) You do realize the ignition switch that starts the vehicle isnt even slowing someone down? The steering wheel being locked is what stops a thief. Thats why they destroy the collum. So if the wheel is locked, even if you were to hot wire it, its still not going anywhere.

So without the key or destroying the collum it isnt moving. That being said, just jump the starter from underneath the jeep. Just because you can start it dosen't mean you can steal it.

If you cant jump the starter, hot wiring it wont fix it.,

Hi Blacksmith, in my case, the cylinder is locking and unlocking.. this works *fine* with the key halfway, with any screwdriver and even if you put the black ring in place and do it with the hand.

What is happening is the cylinder is not moving to the accessories and ignition position..

so, what are you telling is, having the steering wheel free (which is) and wiring the small bolt from the started directly to the positive of the battery the car will start?

That can be a great solution to take the Cherokee back home from the Police Station lot,
I have learn from razor's video, that it's very easy to change the cylinder on the 1995 models... but mine it's 1993 and I have to completely take apart the steering wheel which need more time and major tools, and I don't think it's a good idea to do a major operation on the street even with the permission of the Police (it's forbidden by law here to repair cars on the street)

thanks to all... I'm getting closer to the point!
I just want my baby back home.. where I can do all the fixings with time!

Well, finally I had no other option to tow the car to a garage...

I was willing to change myself the ignition cylinder, but I had no choice.

I don't know you, I don't know your intentions. For that I am not going to tell you how to hotwire an XJ. I will only advise you to cough up $50 to get it towed to your house for repair or buy another ignition switch and swap it out. the steering column is probably broken open so it will be a 5 minute job.

Forgive me for being a bitter someone broke into and stole my XJ in 2004. I was without my baby for several months before the police recovered it. Insurance had already written it off and I had moved on. Every day I had to drive the ******* rental car was like repeated punches in the junk. I have never recovered from that so forgive me for being an *******.

Anyone that knows how to bypass the ignition but didn't say how I thank you!

**** you. Dudes asking for help, and you cant help him out. He lives in another state and DOESNT KNOW YOU. So what the **** is your problem *****? Now I remember why I stopped using this forum.

well the diference between the Romanians who stole my car and me, is that they are thieves and I'm not.

Hopefully the Police was much more comprensive and helping than you and took my beloved Cherokee to the garage without no cost.
